Application Firewalling by Palo Alto Networks

Next Generation Firewall by Palo Alto Networks

Palo Alto Networks "Next Generation Firewall" identifies and controls internet applications efficiently. Conventional firewalls merely classify the traffic according to protocols and ports. Most web traffic, HTTP for example, would be identified as coming through port 80 without any additional information on each application, port and protocols. This problem is not only restricted to port 80. Internet applications increasingly use encrypted SSL tunnels via port 443, using alternate ports and disguise themselves by "port hopping" to find loopholes in the firewall.

Traditional firewalls offer no effective protection to intelligently manage today´s risks linked with internet applications. The IT departments of companies and authorities are trying to offset these problems and rely on proxies, IDP systems, URL filter and other complex solutions - but  these are also inefficient to solve the "application problem".

An overview of the Palo Alto Networks "Next Generation Firewall" product range can be found here: Palo Alto Firewall Family (pdf, 6 pages, English).

Palo Alto Networks uses three unique technologies to precisely identify applications, assigning users to an application and control traffic for "Content Policy" violations. With the focus on business-relevant items such as applications, users and content control, you can achieve the following objectives and benefits:

· Risik management through policy-based application control
   and hazard avoidance
· Controlled and safe use of new web based
   applications
· Support efficiency through controlled application use
based on users and groups, not only IP-addresses

With numerous network functionality and a catchy policy management editor, Palo Alto Networks Next Generation Firewalls can be used as a complement or as a substitute for existing firewall use:

With a variety of different hardware platforms, Palo Alto Networks offers the right solution for different sizes of organizations:

Palo Alto Networks 200 firewall series:
The PA-200, a small form factor firewall that extends visibility and control over applications, users and content to enterprise branch offices. It is a quiet and small device to sit on a desktop, yet the PA-200 extends the same control used in perimeter and datacenter environments without compromising on functionality and performance.
A datasheet with all details of the PA-200 series can be found here: Palo Alto PA-200 series.

Palo Alto Networks 500 firewall series:
The Palo Alto Networks PA-500 is targeted at high speed Internet gateway deployments for enterprise branch offices and medium size businesses. The PA-500 manages network traffic flows using dedicated computing resources for networking, security, threat prevention and management.
A datasheet with all details of the PA-500 series can be found here: Palo Alto PA-500 series.

Palo Alto Networks 2000 firewall series:
The PA-2020 and PA-2050 are two high-speed firewall gateways for small and medium-sized organizations.
A datasheet with all details of the PA-2000 series can be found here: Palo Alto PA-2000 series.

Palo Alto Networks 4000 firewall series:
The PA-4020, PA-4050 and PA-4060 are three high-speed firewall gateways with mulit-GB throughput for medium-sized and large organizations.
A datasheet with all details of the PA-4000 series can be found here: Palo Alto PA-4000 series.

Palo Alto Networks 5000 firewall series:
The PA-50x0 series is a high-speed firewall gateway with mulit-GB throughput, specially designed for large organizations.
A datasheet with all details of the PA-5000 series can be found here: Palo Alto PA-5000 series.
