There are 2 principal options for use of RSA SecurID token authentication:
1. Self-operation of the authentication server
2. Managed RSA authentication by indevis
Since 1999 indevis GmbH has been implementing both solutions according to customers' requirements.
1: Self-operation of the authentication server
In this scenario you operate the authentication server on your own. The following 3 components are necessary:
RSA Authentication Manager license (datasheet, 2 pages)
RSA Authenticators (token) (datasheet, 4 pages)
RSA Agent Software (datasheet, 2 pages)
The RSA Authentication Manager is also available as an appliance (high-availability cluster-option). A datasheet for the RSA appliance can be found here (2 pages)!

Operation of RSA SecurID
The user logs into a network resource with his user name, his own chosen PIN (something he knows) and the token code (something he has). There are no more static passwords. We are talking about "strong user authentication":
User name + PIN + token code = network access
The input data is transmitted by the RSA ACE/Agent. The RSA/ACE Agent encrypts the authentication request and forwards it to the RSA Authentication Manager to verify the authenticity.
The RSA Authentication Manager (server) calculates the current access code based on the time and the secret token start value, and transmits the authentication result to the RSA ACE/Agent. The RSA ACE/Agent then allows or denies the access to the network resource.
